Trinity students challenge abortion poll plans

Two Trinity College students have begun legal proceedings, which, if successful, could prevent the Government setting a date for the proposed abortion referendum.

The students are arguing that the Government's proposals contained in the amending legislation conflict with Article 46 of the Constitution. The students are not saying that the amendment can never be achieved, but they are saying that to make the proposed changes the Constitutional mechanism for doing so must be changed.

Mr Justice Finnegan adjourned the case in the High Court this morning until the State is represented.
