North postal workers to resume service

Postal workers in the North are set to return to work from midnight tonight. They have been on strike since the murder of their colleague Daniel McColgan last Saturday.

Workers in the main sorting office in Belfast voted unanimously to go back to work in a mass meeting this afternoon. This decision follows a meeting between postal union officials, Royal Mail management and Belfast's senior policeman, Assistant Chief Constable Alan McQuillan.

The Northern Secretary has urged them to take part in rallies on Friday to protest against such sectarian attacks.

Earlier, the Loyalist paramilitary group, the Red Hand Defenders, said they were standing down all their units from midnight tonight. This group had claimed to have made the original threat against Catholic post office workers and school teachers.
