Documents destroyed in Enron investigation

Auditors have admitted destroying documents relating to the collapse of Enron, the world's biggest energy company. Arthur Andersen Consultants say thousands of documents relating to the bankrupt company were destroyed by some of its employees.

The admission comes a day after the American Justice Department announced it was opening a criminal investigation into Enron's collapse. Andersen notified the US Securities and Exchange Commission last night that an undetermined number of documents and correspondence had been destroyed in recent months.

The political committee investigating the affair has called for the sacking and even the prosecution of anyone found to have destroyed documents.
