Pregnant asylum seeker challenges decision

Lawyers representing a pregnant Nigerian woman facing deportation have told the High Court that the right to life of her unborn child could be at risk if she were sent back to her country.

Counsel for the State argued that for the purposes of deportation proceedings the rights of the mother and child were indistinguishable from one another. This is the first case where the unborn child itself has been named as a separate party in challenging a deportation order.
