Authorities in Argentina have imposed stringent security measures ahead of the appointment of a new caretaker president - the third to be appointed in less than two weeks. The measures are aimed at preventing fresh outbreaks of protests.
Thousands of police officers have had their leave cancelled and extra guards have been drafted in to protect the government palace and congress buildings. Scenes of violent demonstrations were witnessed at both locations over the weekend. The protests were triggered by an economic crisis in the country.
Argentina's legislative body is due hold an emergency session to name a new leader. Eduardo Duhalde is expected to succeed President Adolfo Rodriguez Saa, who resigned after only seven days in office. Mr Duhalde is a former vice president and current senator of Buenos Aires province.
