Argentina's parliament has formally accepted the resignation of President Fernando de la Rua. His position had become increasingly untenable in face of the country's economic collapse.
Members of parliament will meet in Buenos Aires tomorrow to debate his successor. Some commentators have suggested that early elections may be called. In his last act as President, Mr de la Rua lifted the state of emergency imposed because of widespread rioting in which at least 26 people have been killed.
The rioting was caused by the economic collapse in the country. The emergency measures imposed gave police special powers of arrest to deal with the Argentina's worst rioting in a decade. Fernando de la Rua's government declared a state of emergency on Wednesday.
