Government workers were on strike yesterday, and teachers are due to take action today. President De La Rua announced his belt-tightening programme last month. It includes cuts in government salaries and pensions to try to balance Argentina's budget.
The IMF is to decide whether to release a further $6bn in credits to help it meet payments on its $128bn foreign debt. The debt threatens to bankrupt the country following three years of recession.
