Police in the North have recorded a dramatic rise in the number of arrests for drink-driving offences during their pre-Christmas clampdown. One hundred and thirty-eight drivers have been arrested in the first eleven days of the new "bump and be breathalysed" campaign.
A total of 710 drivers were stopped on suspicion of drink driving, while the number of arrests is 25% greater than those recorded last year during the same period.
Twelve drivers were found to be at least three times over the limit, while two were in excess of five times over the legal limit. One quarter of all road deaths in the North are attributed to alcohol.
