Seán Sherwin is facing a significant bill for costs following his libel action against Independent Newspapers. The Fianna Fáil National Organiser won the case last week but was awarded damages of just £250.
The High Court has awarded him costs of £5,000 for the eleven-day action which was estimated to have cost up to £0.5m. He will have to pay up to £100,000 costs for Independent Newspapers and pick up the tab for his own legal team as well.
The Court found that his case should have been taken in the Circuit Court and ordered him to pay the defendants half of the difference in the costs between the Circuit Court and High Court.
