Ombudsman rejects NI police chief's request

The North's Police Ombudsman has denied a request by Sir Ronnie Flanagan for extra time to respond to its report on the Omagh bombings before its official publication.

A spokesperson for Nuala O'Loan said that the report would be published as planned on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the North's police chief has been urged to drop a plan to engage and outside force to investigate the Omagh bombing.

The report by the Police Ombudsman, leaked earlier this week, claims that the Special Branch ignored warnings about an attack on the County Tyrone town.

Alban Maginness, a senior SDLP member of the Stormont Assembly, said that any new inquiry should be conducted by the recently constituted Policing Board, which oversees the new Police Service.
