Irish singer Mic Christopher dies

Dublin-based singer-songwriter Mic Christopher has died. He had been on a life support machine following a fall in Holland nearly two weeks' ago while on tour with The Waterboys. He passed away in the presence of his family and friends yesterday afternoon.

Born in New York to Irish parents in 1969, Christopher returned with his family to Ireland in 1972. He played trad music at school and began busking at the age of 15.

He founded the acclaimed Irish band The Mary Janes in 1990 and released two albums with the band. He went solo in 1999 and was working on material for an album at the time of his death.

Mike Scott of the Waterboys said, in a statement on the band's website that they send their thoughts and condolences to Mic's family at this time. "We send our love and blessings to Mic as he journeys to the Light."
