Northern Alliance strikes deal on Afghan govt

The Northern Alliance has struck an outline deal with the other main Afghan factions on establishing an interim parliament. The breakthrough came at the talks in Bonn on Afghanistan's future.

The Alliance also said that it would drop its objections to a foreign peacekeeping force. The discussions involve all the rival factions in the country, except the Taliban. Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah stressed overnight that the Alliance was flexible on the issue of a peacekeeping force.

The deal struck today will see the delegates naming a commission of about 20 people to draw up a list of members for an interim parliament. The assembly will choose its own executive government for the interim period, during which it will write a new constitution. Once that was completed, elections will be held.
