The Colombian army says it found the passport of a 28-year-old Briton on the headless body of a man killed when soldiers clashed with rebels yesterday.
The man was killed while in the company of a group of left-wing guerrillas, the army said. His body was found after a gun battle with the National Liberation Army in the North of the country. It is unclear whether the man was fighting with the guerrillas or being held hostage by them.
The headless corpse on which the passport was found made it difficult to immediately confirm that it was Parks.
Local media reported that Parks was Irish but information on whether he was from the North is not yet available. Britain's Foreign Office in London said Parks was registered as living in the southern English town of Bromley, Kent.
The authorities are investigating whether he is linked with three other Irishmen arrested in Colombia in August.
