Palestinian bomber carries out attack in Gaza

A Palestinian suicide bomber has killed himself and slightly wounded two Israeli soldiers near the Gaza Strip. An Israeli army spokesman said that the bomber blew himself up next to an army jeep near a kibbutz on the Israeli side of the border.

Earlier, US President George W Bush condemned the assassination today of Israel's tourism minister, Rehavam Zeevi, and called on the Palestinian Authority to hunt down those responsible.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which opposes Mr Arafat's policies on dealing with Israel, has said it carried out both attacks.

Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, said that he held Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat responsible for the assassination of Mr Zeevi, a hard-line Israeli cabinet minister. He was shot dead in a Jerusalem hotel.

Mr Arafat subsequently ordered the arrest of the killers. The Palestinian Authority has condemned the killing and denied any responsibility.

A spokesman for the PFLP said that the assassination was in retaliation for the killing of one of its leaders. Abu Ali Mustafa died in an Israeli missile attack in the West Bank in August.

Mr Sharon said that Mr Zeevi's killing had "changed everything". He accused Mr Arafat of bearing sole responsibility, claiming that the Palestinian Authority harboured the murderers.

Mr Zeevi was a far-right politician opposed to making concessions to the Palestinians. The 75-year-old resigned as tourism minister on Monday in protest against Mr Sharon's decision to ease restrictions on the Palestinian population and withdraw troops from a Palestinian-ruled area of the West Bank.

His resignation was due to come into effect today. As head of the extreme-right National Union party, Mr Zeevi notoriously compared Mr Arafat to Hitler. He has spoken of expelling Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Earlier this year, he called on the military to destroy Mr Arafat's house to force him to reconsider his fight against Israel.

The former general also stated his support for seizing Palestinian-controlled areas of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in response to attacks against Jewish settlers. Before joining the Knesset, he had an illustrious military career. The father of five was well-known for wearing his military dog tags.
