Carlos the Jackal to wed

Carlos the Jackal has revealed plans to marry his French lawyer next year. The Venezuelan revolutionary, whose real name is Illich Ramirez Sanchez, will marry Isabelle Coutant-Peyre. The happy couple aim to tie the knot in the grim Sante prison in Paris within a few months, once existing marriages are annulled.

"There is a huge difference between the image presented of him and the reality - he's much more conformist than I am," said Ms Coutant-Peyre.

Carlos is serving a life sentence for the murder in 1975 of two French secret service agents. He is believed to be responsible for over 80 killings in the name of the Palestinian struggle and other revolutionary causes during the 1970s and 1980s. His most infamous crime was the 1975 assault on an OPEC meeting in Vienna, where 70 people were taken hostage, including eleven oil ministers.

He is being held in solitary confinement, but makes occasional court appearances under heavy guard. France seized Carlos in 1994 out of Sudan, where he had converted to Islam and married a local woman under Muslim rites. He has another marriage to Magdalena Kopp, a German former revolutionary.
