Murdered baby to be buried in Down today

A murdered new born baby was due to be buried this morning in Newtownards, County Down. It is almost a year since his battered body was found in a shallow grave beside Strangford Lough.

Despite twelve months of investigation, the RUC has so far failed to identify the baby or his parents. The body of the baby was found in a wooded area near Mount Stewart on 6 October last year.

He weighed just under seven pounds and had sparse dark hair. Police said that he was born alive and last week an inquest heard he had suffered extensive head and other injuries soon afterwards.

Newtownards Borough Council organised the funeral, which included an interdenominational service, and local businesses have contributed towards the costs.

A headstone for the baby with no name will be put in place later on the tiny grave prepared in Movilla Cemetery on a hill above the town. The RUC team investigating the murder is making a fresh appeal for information about the baby.

It believes there must be someone who can help them with information to help identify him. Hundreds of local people gave DNA samples to police but so far the investigations have proved inconclusive.
