Estrada boycotts corruption trial

Ex-Philippines President Joseph Estrada today boycotted his corruption trial. However, the court ruled for the trial to proceed without defence lawyers. Estrada's lawyers cited that the court was trying the case in haste as their reason to boycott the court.

The 64-year-old is accused of plundering state funds and using them to set up an elaborate protection racket on illegal gambling. He was deposed in a popular revolt in January.

Mr Estrada's lawyers have argued that the court should not proceed with the hearing until after the Supreme Court has processed a motion questioning the legality of the law under which the former President is being charged.
