The Minister for the Environment has said that the Government will be targeting people who drive under the influence of prohibited drugs.
Speaking in Waterford at the opening of a new stretch of the Waterford/Cork road, Noel Dempsey said that current legislation would be supplemented by tougher laws to tackle the issue.
Minister Dempsey said that studies were being done at here and abroad to assess the percentage of people driving while under the influence of all types of drugs.
He said that the Government would examine the findings from a number studies and he expected that more legislation would be introduced.
The Minister said that the use of prohibited drugs while driving is currently dealt with under Section 49 of the Road Traffic Act, but that would be revisited after the study's findings were considered.
