A one-day stoppage at several thousand building sites in Dublin may take place next week in sympathy with the family of Tim Kelleher. The 56-year-old construction worker from County Kerry died following a fall from a ladder on a site in Dublin earlier this morning.
He died at 1.30am in Dublin's Mater Hospital after the fall at the John Paul site at Mayor Street yesterday evening. Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority are investigating the death.
John Paul Construction issued a statement this afternoon, saying they were investigating a fatal accident on their Mayor Street site on 23 August. The company said that it wished to extend its sympathies to the family and relatives of the deceased.
Workers across thousands of construction sites are expected to down tools for a one-day stoppage next week in sympathy and out of anger at what they see as the continuing risks on building sites.
Thirteen people, including three children, have been killed in construction related accidents this year. Three workers have died in the past week.
SIPTU says that they have yet to see legislation they were promised by the Government in February of last year, which would increase health and safety training. However the health and safety authority says that the rate of deaths has halved since the peak in 1998.
