An English man has appeared in court today charged with the assault of his partner at their home in Schull in West Cork. Ian Bailey, aged 44, with an address at the Prarie, Liscaha, Schull, was charged with assault causing harm to Jules Thomas contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act at the Prarie, Liscaha, on 18 August.
Garda Kevin Kelleher of Schull Garda Station told a special sitting of Listowel District Court that he arrested Mr Bailey at Cork Airport yesterday at 7.15pm and brought him to Bandon Garda Station.
He said that Mr Bailey made no reply when he was arrested, charged and cautioned. Superintendent Frank O'Brien said that Gardaí were seeking to have Mr Bailey remanded in custody as it was their belief that he was about to abscond when he was arrested at Cork Airport.
Superintendent O'Brien said that he was in possession of a one-way ticket and two suitcases when he was arrested. He said that it was their belief that he would not stand trial if granted bail.
Gardaí applied to have him remanded in custody to appear again at Clonakilty District Court tomorrow and Judge Terence Finn granted the application.
