GAA welcomes reaction to policing proposals

The GAA has welcomed the initial positive reaction to the proposed revised policing plan in Northern Ireland. In a statement tonight, the Association said that it recognised that certain difficulties still exist.

The Association has requested a copy of the revised proposals and will give priority to studying the report. The statement added that the GAA was not in a position to comment further at this point in time.

Rule 21 of the GAA's Official Guide bans members of security forces in the North from playing gaelic games. At a Special Congress in 1998, the GAA passed a motion saying that it intended to delete the rule, once steps were taken to implement amended structures and policing arrangements.
