An American millionaire balloonist is reported to have landed in South America. Steve Fossett was forced to abandon his fifth attempt to become the first person to circle the globe solo in a balloon.
He left Western Australia almost a fortnight ago, and had successfully travelled across the Pacific before encountering storms over Argentina.
He decided to bring his craft down in on Brazilian territory near the border with Uruguay.
The 57-year-old broke the record for the longest-ever solo balloon flight during this attempt.
Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard and his English co-pilot Brian Jones became the first crew to circle the globe in a balloon in March 1999. The trip has never been done solo.
