A post mortem examination on the body of a newborn baby found abandoned in Limerick yesterday has shown it was a full term infant girl. Dr Marie Cassidy, Assistant State Pathologist, is set to carry out further tests to determine the exact cause of death.
It is understood that the baby did not die violently, but the tests will show whether it was stillborn or had independent life after birth. This could take a few days to complete.
Anonymous call
The newborn baby was found in a plastic bag on wasteland opposite East Singland Road at around 5.30pm yesterday, following an anonymous call to Henry Street Garda Station. The baby's body was taken to the Midwestern Regional Hospital.
Gardaí are appealing for help from anybody who may know of the circumstances of the baby's death.
Gardaí have also appealed to the mother of the child to contact them, as they believe she may be distressed and in need of medical help. They say she will be treated sympathetically.
