Genoa police brutality investigation opens

Prosecutors in Italy have opened a third investigation into alleged police brutality during the protests at the G8 summit in Genoa last weekend. Pressure has been mounting within Italy and from abroad, as protestors have come forward with accounts of being beaten while in custody. Italian President Silvio Berlusconi has promised to hold a full investigation.

Mr Berlusconi defended his government's handling of security in Genoa. "As far the government is concerned, we will not cover up anything. If there were excesses... there will be no cover-up for those who violated the law. "But one must not confuse those who did the attacking and those who were attacked," he said.

One protestor was shot dead, hundreds were injured and over 200 were arrested during demonstrations at last weekend's G8 summit.
