Abbeylara inquiry adjourned until October

The Gardaí's High Court challenge to the Oireachtas Sub-Committee inquiry into the death of John Carthy at Abbeylara has been adjourned. The case will resume at the start of the new law term in October.

The Gardaí has contended that the Sub-Committee of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence, Equality and Women's Rights has no jurisdiction to inquire into events and make findings of fact or express opinions that could be adverse to the good names of citizens.

The Sub-Committee disputes this, claiming that it has the necessary consent to issue directions to Gardaí and other witnesses to appear before its public hearings. It has also submitted that their work is in line with international human rights obligations to inquire into fatal shootings by State forces.
