Witness tells effects of blood product infection

An English expert witness has told the Lindsay Tribunal that haemophiliacs affected with Hepatitis C from blood products develop severe liver problems quicker than other patients. Professor Eric Preston from Sheffield said that 3% of Irish women infected with the virus through anti-D develop cirrhosis.

However, the rate was much higher with haemophiliacs. He said that he believed this happened because of the amount of virus haemophiliacs were exposed to by continually using concentrated clotting agents.
