President and foreign minister attend memorial

The President and the Minister for Foreign Affairs were among the congregation at a memorial service to mark the 25th anniversary of the killing of the British Ambassador to Ireland, Christopher Ewart-Biggs. Mr Ewart-Biggs was killed when an IRA landmine blew up his car near his residence in South Dublin on 21 July, 1976. The envoy had only been in the country twelve days when the blast happened yards from his official home.

The private secretary from the Northern Ireland Office, Judith Cooke, also died in the blast. Brian Cubbon, who was the permanent under-secretary, and the driver of the vehicle, Brian O'Driscoll, were seriously injured in the explosion. Mr O'Driscoll, who still works at the British embassy in Dublin, was among the congregation at today's ceremony in St Patrick's cathedral. Britain's present ambassador to Ireland, Sir Ivor Roberts, delivered an address.
