The Taoiseach has said that the Cabinet will not consider holding a referendum on abortion until after the summer break. His comments suggest that a referendum before the next general election is unlikely. Speaking to reporters at the start of a visit to Brazil, Mr Ahern ruled out early decisions on the issue.
He also ruled out holding an abortion poll in conjunction with a general election. The Minister for Health said yesterday that the Government remained committed to holding an abortion referendum, and that it would be possible to do so in the autumn. Mícheal Martin was responding to comments by the Tánaiste, who indicated there might be a delay in order to allow an extensive public information campaign on the issue.
The Taoiseach also said that he supported the Tánaiste's view that there should not be a divisive campaign, and this was why so much effort was being put in. Mr Ahern assured the Independent TD, Harry Blaney, and the three other pro-Government Independents that he would consult them as soon as the sub-committee had reported.
