It is believed that the murder of the Dublin criminal, Seamus Hogan, may have been caught on security videotape. Detectives are studying tapes from a Transport Club's closed circuit TV system which was operating on Saturday night when the murder occurred. A post mortem has established that Mr Hogan died from two gunshot wounds to the body. He was ambushed in his car by two masked men armed with pistols. They fired six shots at him.
This evening the murder investigation team, over 40 local detectives, and members of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, met to review progress so far. Gardaí have yet to identify and interview all the people who were in the club that night. They carried out house-to-house inquiries in the Crumlin area today.
Detectives are also studying close circuit television pictures taken at the Transport Club on Saturday night. There are cameras in the carpark and the murder is believed to be on video. Even though the killers were masked, vital information and evidence could be gleaned from the tapes.
Gardaí are also anxious to trace a silver-blue car seen speeding away from Parnell Road nearby. They believe the three-man gang escaped in this car after abandoning a stolen black Mazda. Drug squad detectives believe Mr Hogan was a distributor for John Cunningham's cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine, which was brought into Ireland from Holland. Mr Cunningham is currently serving nine years in Holland for drug trafficking and firearms offences.
Mr Hogan was a target of both the National Drugs Unit and the Criminal Assets Bureau, which was in the process of identifying the unemployed man's substantial assets. Gardaí say it is still too early to say whether Mr Hogan was shot by paramilitaries or a criminal gang. He had fallen out with both and there were three previous attempts on his life.
