Mass grave uncovered in Bosnia-Herzegovina

Officials in Bosnia-Herzegovina say that the remains of at least 250 people have been found in a mass grave. Forensic experts recovered documents and personal belongings indicating that the bodies were of people from the nearby town of Srebrenica. More than 5,000 Muslim men were massacred by Serb forces in Srebrenica in 1995.

"This is one of the biggest findings in a single mass grave we have had so far and judging by documents we found in it these are the people from Srebrenica," exhumation team head Murat Hurtic said. "It is difficult to say exactly how many bodies were there but it is definitely more than 200," said Mr Hurtic, whose team was formed by the Muslim Commission for Missing Persons.

He said that it was a "secondary grave" to which the remains had been transferred from the original burial site after Bosnia's 1992-95 war between Muslims, Serbs and Croats. The sixth anniversary of the capture of the Srebrenica "UN safe area" in July 1995 by Bosnian Serb troops and the subsequent massacre will be commemorated in the town on 11 July.
