RUC dismisses suggestion Republicans shot teenager

The RUC has dismissed the suggestion by David Trimble that Republicans were behind a fatal shooting yesterday. Ciarán Cummings, aged 19, was murdered in Antrim as he waited for a lift to work. The North's former First Minister said today that there was good reason to suspect that Republicans were responsible for the shooting.

However, Detective Superintendent John Brannigan, who is leading the inquiry into the murder, said that there was no information to suggest that Republicans were involved. David Trimble had also claimed the killing could be linked to drugs. Security sources have confirmed that although Mr Cummings had a number of minor convictions none was drug related. Sinn Féin described Mr Trimble's claim as a slur on the young man and his family.
