Court hears alleged Real IRA leader met FBI agent

The Special Criminal Court has heard that the alleged leader of the Real IRA met an agent working for the FBI and British Intelligence a number of times over a two-year period. The court was told that Michael McKevitt met the agent, David Rupert, and asked him to acquire equipment for the dissident Republican paramilitary organisation. Fifty-one-year-old Michael McKevitt from Beach Park, Dundalk, County Louth, is charged with membership of an illegal organisation and with directing terrorism.

The Court was told that the State is relying on David Rupert's evidence; his defence is seeking access to documentation and financial records of his dealings with the FBI and British Intelligence. Mr Rupert is currently in the United States and can only be contacted through the FBI.
