Pipebomb defused in North Belfast garden

A pipebomb found in the back garden of a house in North Belfast has been defused. The bomb, at Alliance Avenue, is the latest incident in the continuing sectarian violence in the area.

The RUC has blamed Loyalists for an earlier gun attack on a house in North Belfast, in which a Catholic man was injured. A police spokesman said that the attack happened at Rosapenna Street. It is understood a shot was fired through the window of a house. The man is not thought to have been seriously wounded.

In a separate incident, the RUC fired one plastic bullet and made one arrest after disturbances in Portadown last night. Missiles were thrown and a burning barricade blocked the Corcrain Road. Earlier, police recovered a number of petrol bombs in the town. Some 15 devices were found in the Edgarstown estate.
