TV quiz show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" is investigating whether a contestant was mistakenly done out of £93,000. The contestant, Shane O'Doherty from Templeogue in Dublin, has threatened legal action claiming he gave the correct answer. A spokesperson for the programme said that it was required under the rules to give four references to back up their answer. These were the New Oxford Dictionary 1998, Britannica.com, the Dictionary of Medicines (Third Edition), and Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology 1999.
The show also says that it put the question under scrutiny - "Where is the lunula located in the human body?" - to a consultant cardiologist, a professor of anatomy, a doctor in a department of anatomy and two eminent heart surgeons. It says that four immediately answered the fingernail and one did not know. Mr O'Doherty said that the lunula was located in the heart.
Tyrone Productions, the makers of the show, has so far not heard from lawyers representing Mr O'Doherty. Heart surgeon Maurice Nelligan told the programme this morning that the lunula was definitely a section of the heart. An RTÉ spokesperson said that Tyrone Productions were keeping the station informed while investigations continued.
