Thousands of South Africans have attended the funeral of the child AIDS activist Nkosi Johnson. Nkosi, who was born with HIV, died last week at the age of 12. During his short life, he fought for AIDS patients to be treated with dignity and compassion. He was buried in a hero's cemetery in Johannesburg alongside some of the great figures from the anti-apartheid struggle. The funeral was attended by a number of political leaders but not by President Thabo Mbeki who has caused a storm of protest by casting doubt on the link between HIV and AIDS.
