Court rules "the Monk" can drive taxi in Dublin

The Dublin District Court has ruled that Gerard Hutch, the Dublin man known as "the Monk", can drive a taxi in Dublin. Two years ago, Hutch was not deemed suitable to drive a taxi because his tax affairs were not up to date. The 38-year-old married father of five has since paid over an estimated £1.5 million to the Revenue following an investigation by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB).

Today, Gardaí withdrew their objections to Hutch on the grounds that he is now tax-compliant. A detective from CAB told the Court that there was no evidence that Hutch was involved in any criminal activity and he said that he would get into a taxi driven by Hutch. Afterwards Gerard Hutch said that he was delighted with the decision and that he intended to do the taxi-driver's exam.
