King and Queen of Nepal buried

The bodies of Nepal's King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya were cremated today. The funeral happened barely 24 hours after they and other family members were apparently gunned down by their eldest son, Crown Prince Dipendra. Tens of thousands of people lined the streets of the capital, Kathmandu, to watch the funeral procession of the king and queen and two of their children. The government has declared a 13-day period of mourning.

The killings are said to have followed an argument over the Crown Prince's marriage plans. Despite having seriously injured himself, he has been named as the new king and his uncle has been appointed regent.

Earlier today, Nepal's Interior minister said that the Crown Prince may not have carried out the killings. He has distanced himself from an earlier official report which identified the Crown Prince as the killer and said that the circumstances of the massacre remain unclear.
