Newspaper executive shot dead in Basque region

The financial director of a leading newspaper in the Basque region of Spain has been shot dead. Police said that the killing of the 54-year-old man in the car park in the northern city of San Sebastian could clearly be blamed on the Basque separatist group, ETA. The killing is the first to be blamed on ETA since crucial Basque parliamentary elections earlier this month.

Shortly after the shooting, a bomb exploded in a parked car. More than two million people in the Basque region favour greater self-rule or independence, but overwhelmingly reject ETA violence. ETA has, in recent months, carried out a number of attacks on journalists who were critical of its violent struggle for an independent Basque homeland.
