Two Garda bodies have indicated that they are likely to seek a judicial review of the workings of the Oireachtas sub-committee investigating the shooting of John Carthy in Abbeylara. The Garda Representative Association and the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors said that they believed a judicial review was warranted because of the way the inquiry was "conducting its business". The bodies made the comment in a joint statement today, although they had made it clear before the inquiry began its work that they did not believe it was the appropriate forum.
Today's statement also renews the possibility that members of the Garda Emergency Response Unit will not participate in the inquiry's work. The Oireachtas sub-committee rose at the end of last month after nine ERU members declared that they could not give evidence due to concern that their testimony might lead to difficulty with the detection of other crimes. The sub-committee Chairman, Sean Ardagh, TD, said that the inquiry would sit again on 1 June and was optimistic that it would be able to complete its work.
