Racism a threat to fabric of society - Taoiseach

The Taoiseach has said that racism could undermine the fabric of society in this country if it goes unchallenged. In a statement marking International Day Against Racism, Bertie Ahern said that the Government was totally opposed to racism and to any manifestation of racism in Irish society. He said that Irish people should have a well-developed sense of justice and equality and an aversion to prejudice because of their experience of emigration and division on this island.

The Minister for Justice also condemned racism, saying that the Government is totally determined to combat any tendency towards racism and racist acts. He called for support in creating a society devoid of prejudice and discrimination. John O'Donoghue in particular welcomed the activity pack "Raising Awareness - Diversity and Racism" produced in partnership with the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland for school purposes.
