A Chilean judge has lifted an order placing former military dictator, Augusto Pinochet, under house arrest. Judge Juan Guzman had ordered in January that General Pinochet be tried on charges that he planned the deaths or disappearances of 75 people in the immediate aftermath of his 1973 coup. However, last Thursday an appeals court ruled that he would instead face charges of covering up these crimes. His release must now be approved by the Appeals Court. Opponents of the General are to seek to have the ruling overturned.
