Gardaí investigating alleged police corruption in County Donegal are expected to make a number of arrests in the near future. Garda sources said tonight that instructions had been received from the Director of Public Prosecutions which would be acted on in the very near future. The investigation concerns the circumstances surrounding the conviction and subsequent imprisonment of a Donegal publican on drugs charges.
Meanwhile, a senior RUC inspector has been jailed for two years following what is being described as the largest internal anti-corruption investigation ever undertaken by the force. Inspector Derek John Robinson, who is 45 and based at Omagh, had pleaded guilty to fraud and interfering with the judicial system. He also admitted obtaining property by deception, handing a forged letter to a magistrate, failing to prosecute a case properly and advising his partner, an RUC constable, to tell lies during a police probe.
