Two suspected ETA members arrested in Barcelona

Spanish police have arrested two suspected ETA members who were driving a car packed with explosives in the city of Barcelona. The man and woman, who were armed with pistols, were arrested early this morning. The Interior Minister said that they are suspected of linking up with a unit of the Basque separatist group in Barcelona which has killed four people in the past three months.

ETA is being held responsible for 792 deaths since 1968, according to interior ministry figures. The group is thought to have killed 23 people in 2000. However, Interior Minister Jaime Mayor Oreja is confident that the authorities are winning the battle against the group – last year Spanish police arrested 75 ETA suspects, 24 were arrested in France and one in Mexico. Despite this the Barcelona group continues to be active.
