Uaneen Fitzsimons killed in car accident in Laois

The RTÉ presenter, Uaneen Fitzsimons, has been killed in a car accident near Borris-in-Ossory in County Laois. The accident happened just after 1.00pm when the car, in which the 29-year-old 2FM broadcaster and television presenter was a passenger, was in collision with an articulated lorry at Ballaghmore, halfway between Borris-in-Ossory and Roscrea. The driver of the car was taken to hospital and is said to be in a stable condition. The driver of the lorry is presently helping Gardaí at Abbeyleix with their inquiries into the incident.

A native of Ardglass in County Down, Uaneen Fitzsimons attended Saint Nicholas' Primary School in Ardglass, Assumption Grammar School in Ballynahinch and Down College of Further Education in Downpatrick. She went on to work with BBC Northern Ireland, in the newsroom, current affairs department and on the radio show "Across the Line". After a year with BBC 1 Northern Ireland, she moved to Dublin to pursue a degree in Communication Studies in Dublin City University. She graduated in 1994 and joined RTÉ Cork in January of 1997. Ms Fitzsimons presented the "No Disco" show on Network 2 every Wednesday and a late night 2FM show weekdays. She is survived by her Mother, Father, two brothers and a sister.
