The man shot dead in a bar in Limerick City Centre last night was 40 year-old Eddie Ryan from the Kileely area of the city. Two women, a mother and her daughter, were also seriously injured in the attack, but they are now believed to be out of danger. Gardaí are searching for a three-man gang that was seen speeding away from the City Centre bar shortly after 10.00pm last night. A car has been found burnt out in the Corbally area of Limerick City. It is believed that it may be the getaway car used in the gun attack. The scene has been preserved.
The Moose bar in Cathedral Place, close to Limerick City Centre, was crowded with patrons enjoying a Sunday night drink last night. Just minutes before 10.00pm, two men wearing balaclavas and carrying pistols ran into the bar. They targeted Eddie Ryan, who had come into the pub with his 18-year-old son half an hour beforehand, following the funeral of a relative of theirs. The two gunmen fired a number of shots injuring three people: Eddie Ryan and two women who were sitting close to him.
Mr Ryan was dead on arrival at Limerick Regional Hospital. 63-year-old Mary Redden was shot in the chest and leg and her 26-year-old daughter Deirdre was shot in the lung. Both are still seriously ill in hospital. It is understood that they knew the dead man as a neighbour, but had no other connection with him. The gunmen fired a number of shots at the window of the pub as they made their getaway. Gardaí have been searching for a red or wine coloured car seen speeding from the scene. They also believe that there may have been a third man in the gang driving the getaway car.
