Channel 4 crew to appear in Liberian court on spy charges

A British film crew, arrested in Liberia on charges of spying, is due in court today. The four-man crew was working on a documentary on African politics for Channel 4. The men have been accused of acts against the security of the state and all their videotapes have been seized by police.

British director David Barrie from London, Zimbabwe-born cameraman Tim Lambon, who has Zimbabwean and British nationality, South African cameraman Gugulakhe Radebe and award-winning Sierra Leonean film maker Sorious Samura were arrested in their hotel on Friday night.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson, US President Bill Clinton's special envoy to Africa, has made a direct appeal to the Liberian president to release the four men. Channel 4 denied the allegations and stressed that the team was engaged in legitimate journalistic activity.
