The former Deputy Prime Minister in Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of sodomy. The jail term, which follows a 14-month court case, will be added to a six-year jail sentence he was given last year for abusing his powers while in government. Mr Anwar has confirmed that he will appeal. He has described the charges as fabrications intended to remove him as a political rival to the Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad.
