An enquiry is under way in Kosovo to try to establish how three Serbs accused of war crimes managed to escape from a hospital under United Nations guard in the city of Mitrovica. In a statement, the United Nations said that the three, who had been held for about a year, were in a hospital in the divided Kosovar city of Mitrovica when they fled. Two Kosovar Serbs were accused of genocide and a third was accused of war crimes.

The statement said that they had been taken there from the town's detention centre on the advice of international doctors. It said that an internal investigation into the case was underway. Mitrovica has been effectively partitioned between the Albanians on the south side of the river and Serbs on the north, where UN and K-For institutions are based.
