John Gilligan, the Dublin man accused of the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin, has succeeded in having two of the three judges who were due to try him, removed from the case. Gilligan remains in custody until October 3 when his trial is due to get underway at the Special Criminal Court. His legal counsel succeeded in having the High Court Judge Kevin O'Higgins stand aside on the grounds that he had presided over hearings involving the Criminal Assets Bureau and Mr Gilligan's wife, Mrs Geraldine Gilligan. Judge Matthew Deery has also agreed to stand aside because he dealt with the trial earlier this year of Kevin and Thomas Meehan, the father and uncle of Brian Meehan, both of whom will feature in the main case against Gilligan.
