Detective Garda Jerry McCabe and Sergeant Andy Callanan were posthumously awarded Scott Medals for bravery at a ceremony in Templemore. Mr McCabe was shot dead by the IRA in Adare four years ago, while Mr Callanan died in an arson attack in Tallaght last year. Detective Garda Ben O'Sullivan was also honoured with a Gold Scott medal, the only Garda in History on which the honour has been conferred twice.

The Scott Medal is the highest honour bestowed on a Garda who has shown exceptional courage and heroism risking their lives in their jobs. Normally a day of celebration for Gardaí and their families, today's ceremony was tinged with sadness in the awarding of Gold Scott medals to two Gardaí who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Ann McCabe accepted the award on behalf of her detective husband Jerry, who was shot dead by the IRA during a post office raid in Adare four years ago.

Yvonne Callanan received the gold medal on behalf of her husband Andy, who died trying to prevent an arson attack at Tallaght Garda station last July. Detective Ben O'Sullivan also shot in Adare was receiving his second Gold Scott Medal, an achievement unprecedented in Garda history, but he said that his thoughts were with his dead colleagues. In a short statement, Mrs Ann McCabe acknowledged the wide community support and sorrow for Gardaí who had died.
